Re-framing, positive outlook transforms perception

Re-framing. It’s defined here on wiki.

It’s a simple concept: re-framing a perception to place it in the context of a larger, positive conception.

For example:

I feel the oppression of an invisible clock ticking.

Re-frame: I feel the oppression of an invisible clock ticking and together with that, my days are filled with a variety of interesting stimulae that present themselves to my curious brain.

Re-framing – taking a feeling of negativity and hitching a ride on that feeling into larger more open spaces to reveal the positive.

If done correctly, intuitively,  then a person can immediately feel relief and even self-love and humour.  Tension evaporates and is replaced with patience and even gratitude for that part of self that was previously considered an ‘enemy’ or a stern disapproving agent of condemnation.

Re-framing. It’s an NLP thing – but also a wider common sense thing.

Turning lemons into lemonade whenever lemons appear – even invisible lemons that have stealthily built their home in our psyche and come out to tear down our dreams, our self-image, our creativity.  Building a response that addresses these energy sappers as they appear – having a tool to neutralize the debilitating effects – all this is re-framing.

We can do it for ourselves. We can do it for others. I have been doing it for years as part of working with special ed students,  students who often show a tendency to self-criticize, to disbelief in ability. It’s natural for me to build them up, and i used rudimentary tools to do so – verbal reassurance, a touch of the hand or shoulder (if they allowed it).  But now, looking into techniques of NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), i know that I can look at their eyes, face, body language to see if my techniques are hitting home. I can adjust my own posture, voice, attitude until I observe that they’ve become visibly more relaxed and open. Then I’ll know that re-framing has hit home.

So it is with me, myself. I hear the voice that says: you know, judih, that you should not be looking at this TEDtalk right now, right in the middle of studying. You should not waste your time. And Judih, you know what ‘waste’ is. bad judih! Bad, bad judih!….etc.   With re-framing, I can say:  oops – a new TEDtalk about the brain and how fascinating it is going to be and that’s because, Judih dear, you love to learn more about the brain. This is more knowledge!

Okay, so 18 minutes are used to watch and listen to the new TED talk, but I am happy in receiving new information by a brilliant expert and I can go back to studying with renewed energetic brain power.

Re-framing. Instead of wasting time on self-condemnation, the time is used to open perception for the greater good! for when I’m happy – everything moves faster.
